Job description

Purpose and Scope:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsibilities include setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities to meet organizational goals.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient-Related

  • Assist in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures and disease processes.
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated.
  • Monitor vital signs, weight, and patient response before, during, and after treatment.
  • Initiate and terminate dialysis treatment following prescribed orders, ensuring patient safety and proper documentation.
  • Assess and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor vascular access, and perform laboratory specimen collection.

Staff-Related

  • Assist in training direct care staff under supervision of a nurse.

Education/Communication

  • Follow organizational policies, maintain a safe and clean environment, and ensure proper machine and area preparation.

Record Keeping

  • Participate in CQI activities, accurately document treatment data, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions.

Infection Control

  • Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and educate patients and families.

Transitional Care Unit

  • Support new patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis, reinforce education, and coordinate care and supplies.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Perform tasks involving lifting, standing, and equipment handling, with accommodations for disabilities.

Education and Licenses

  • High school diploma or GED required; certification as per CMS requirements; valid state licensure as applicable.

Experience and Skills

  • Preferred experience in patient care; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.

This position offers an hourly rate of $15.00 - $25.00, with benefits including health insurance, 401(k), paid time off, and parental leave. No prior dialysis experience needed; on-the-job training provided.
