Purpose and Scope

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organization policies, procedures, and regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines. Assists in maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Supports the organization's commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI activities, including those related to patient satisfaction and process improvement to help patients achieve the organization’s Quality Enhancement Goals (QEP).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Related Education
  • Assist healthcare team members in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures such as Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and disease process/access.
Treatment
  • Welcome patients, inquire about their wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated.
  • Obtain vital signs, weight, and evaluate access pre-treatment.
  • Initiate and monitor dialysis treatment, respond to intradialytic problems, and document all relevant data.
  • Discontinue treatment following procedures, evaluate patient before discharge, and ensure proper documentation.
  • Monitor patient response, perform safety checks, and report changes to the nurse or supervisor.
  • Prepare laboratory specimens, ensure infection control, and maintain supplies and equipment.
Staff and Education
  • Assist in training staff on care procedures, follow policies, and maintain a clean environment.
  • Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions.
Infection Control and Transitional Care
  • Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and assist in transitional dialysis care for new patients.
  • Coordinate patient education on home dialysis options and assist with supply management for TCU.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Includes lifting, moving patients, prolonged standing, and working in healthcare environment with exposure to infectious materials. Must pass Ishihara color blindness test as a condition of employment.

Education and Licenses
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet CMS-approved certification and licensure requirements.
Experience and Skills
  • Previous patient care experience preferred. Successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
