Job description

UPMC is hiring a Part Time Patient Care Tech for our Emergency Department.

This position is on days/evening shift with hours from 7a-7p, 7a-3p or 3p-11p. The schedule also includes every other weekend and holidays.

Purpose:

The Patient Care Technician - Specialist provides routine patient care and supports department services in accordance with established policies and procedures, as directed by nurses or physicians to ensure high-quality patient care. Responsibilities include performing core patient care duties such as ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients), point of care testing (including blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitoring, and HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs). Additional tasks include simple dressings, restraint management, bladder scans, specimen collections, IV and Foley catheter management, phlebotomy, and other skills as competencies are achieved. Advanced skills may include basic arrhythmia, complex wound care, 12-lead EKG, and NG tube management, depending on departmental needs.

Responsibilities:
  • Communicate effectively with the healthcare team, demonstrating understanding of cultural diversity, workplace safety, and professionalism. Develop and maintain respectful relationships internally and externally, showing accountability, enthusiasm, and motivation.
  • Report equipment malfunctions and establish effective communication with other departments. Support unit activities such as responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and patient transport.
  • Perform core patient care duties and advanced skills as competencies are achieved. Assist with therapies, monitor patient status, and provide patient and family instruction under RN supervision. Apply and remove restraints as per protocol.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment by accepting feedback, identifying learning needs, and participating in self-review, projects, and committees. Support department improvements and adhere to policies and safety procedures.
  • Document accurately in medical records, perform timely tasks, transport monitored patients, and perform procedures like Foley catheter insertion/removal, IV management, and clerical functions as needed.
  • Perform duties in accordance with system-wide competencies and other assigned tasks.
