ResponsibilitiesA day in the life of a
Patient Care Technician at Hackensack Meridian
Health includes:
• Providing patient care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served
• Ensuring effective and safe patient outcomes through practice, judgment, and critical actions
• Maintaining ongoing communication with patients, nursing colleagues, and other healthcare team members regarding patient status and care
• Taking initiative to do more than expected, improving job performance, or creating new opportunities
• Participating in interdisciplinary collaboration of the patient’s care plan from admission to discharge
• Participating in Unit/Department Performance Improvement activities
Specific Job Functions may include but are not limited to:
• Welcoming patients and verifying proper identification
• Preparing patients for assessments, admissions, examinations, and procedures
• Recognizing opportunities to enhance patient satisfaction
• Demonstrating knowledge and skills appropriate to patient age
• Obtaining clinical data and notifying RN of abnormal results
• Drawing blood and performing venipuncture
• Performing EKGs and ensuring all equipment is functional and clean
• Assisting with patient transport and preparation for meals or feeding
• Restocking supplies and preparing rooms for new admissions
• Providing hygiene and comfort care
• Assisting with dressing, belongings, and property management
• Performing and documenting glucose finger sticks and other specimen collections
• Providing post-mortem care
• Monitoring patient weights, intake, and output
• Ensuring patient safety and communication regarding condition changes
• Modifying care based on patient needs, including cultural and developmental considerations
• Performing other duties as assigned and adhering to organizational standards.
QualificationsEducation, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
• High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, PCT program, or equivalent medical background (e.g., EMT, HHA, CMA, MA, Nursing Assistant)
• Ability to learn quickly, adapt, and work collaboratively with a focus on patient care
Preferred Qualifications• Experience or certification in phlebotomy, EKG, vital signs, and blood sugar testing
• At least one year of PCT or CNA experience in a hospital setting
• Successful completion of a PCT program including theoretical and clinical components
Licenses and Certifications Required• AHA Basic Healthcare Life Support (BLS) Certification within 60 days of hire
