Job summary

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA is seeking a Patient Care Technician to assist with daily living activities, procedures, and basic therapies on a 5800 oncology unit. This part-time role provides patient care under RN supervision and supports routine nursing tasks.

Responsibilities include assisting with blood glucose, vital signs, I&O, specimen collection, Foley care, and basic dressings as needed. Will require training and credentialing per unit standards; BLS/CPR required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• 1 year healthcare experience OR enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with clinical rotations OR a health sciences bachelor’s degree.
• Advanced skills listed may be required (phlebotomy, IV removal, Foley removal, arrhythmia basics).
• Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class preferred.
• EMT or Paramedic training preferred.

5800 is a 28-bed medical and surgical oncology unit caring for a variety of oncology patients but specializing in gynecological cancer treatments and surgical procedures such as hysterectomies, mastectomies, Syed implants, and free flap/TRAM flap transplants. Many of our patients are admitted to receive chemotherapy, and some may require chemo desensitization. On our unit, we work with negative pressure rooms, disability/bariatric rooms featuring motorized lifts, and telemetry monitors. We consider strong teamwork to be central to our success on 5800 and vital to caring for our patients, and we boast a staff with a wide range of experience.

The Patient Care Technician provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living and assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. They provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.

The Patient Care Technician performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) and at least four of the following BU identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal. They also must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients as well as point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs). In addition, they may also apply simple dressings, placement, and removal of restraints, 12 lead EKG, bladder scan, all specimen collections. All competencies must be achieved.

Candidates without previous PCT experience in a hospital-based setting will be required to attend a 7 day mandatory training course.This course is held during weekdays and daylight hours. All 7 days are mandatory and are scheduled in a structured classroom setting.

Shifts/Hours:

This is a part time role working 20 hours per week. This role works rotating shifts 7am to 7pm, 7pm to 7am, 11pm-7am and 7am-3pm. This role works rotating holidays and weekends. *Hours are subject to change based on business needs.

• High School Diploma or Equivalent
• One of the following:
  • 1 year of general healthcare experience
  • Enrollment in PT/OT/PA Program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field
• Advanced Skills (required as needed based on unit need & patient population): Phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, Basic Arrythmia Course Completion (for telemetry and ED units)
• Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class preferred
• EMT or Paramedic (or in a program) preferred

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

• Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
• Act 33 with renewal
• Act 34 with renewal
• Act 73 FBI Clearance
