Job summary

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital seeks a Patient Care Technician to assist with patient care activities, perform basic nursing assistant duties, and support RNs in managing daily patient needs.

You will participate in tasks like vital signs, phlebotomy, EKGs, and catheter care, contributing to a safe and compassionate patient environment. This role includes rotating shifts and continuous learning in a Magnet-designated setting.

Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or GED required with healthcare experience options.
  • Phlebotomy, IV insertion, and telemetry skills may be required depending on unit.
  • CPR/BLS certification is required and background clearances may be needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care including assistance with procedures and activities of daily living.
  • Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies; report changes in patient status to RN.

Intensive Care Unit - 4800

is a 14-bed critical care unit serving adult medical and surgical patients. A fast-paced acuity adaptable ICU, 4800 cares for all types of patients at Magee other than infants, ranging from those needing critical care interventions to those in stepdown condition; we work with a large number of post-surgical patients who are being seen for a variety of specialties, and we frequently partner with RNs from Labor & Delivery to provide care for critical antepartum and postpartum patients. What can you Expect as a Patient Care Technician?

The Patient Care Technician provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living and assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. They provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.

The Patient Care Technician performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) and at least four of the following BU identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal. They also must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients as well as point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs). In addition, they may also apply simple dressings, placement, and removal of restraints, 12 lead EKG, bladder scan, all specimen collections. All competencies must be achieved.

Shifts/Hours:

This position works rotating shifts 7am to 7pm and 7pm to 7am. This role works rotating holidays and weekends. Hours are subject to change based on business needs.

  • HS Diploma or GED Required and one of the following:
    • 2 years of healthcare experience and meet clinical requirements of PCT-Senior and PCT Specialist Roles (Peripheral IV cath insertion, indwelling cath insertion, and straight cath insertion)
    • Advanced Skills (required as needed based on unit need & patient population): Phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, Basic Arrythmia Course Completion (for telemetry and ED units)
    • 1 year of experience and enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with completion of at least one clinical rotation
    • 1 year of experience and completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Other clearances may be required based on department of hire
