Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, part of Sentara Health, is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Neuro ICU on a full‑time day shift (12 hours) with rotating weekends. The unit is a 16-bed neuro specialty area caring for brain, stroke, and spinal injury patients in Norfolk, VA.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma, BLS within 90 days, and healthcare experience. CNA/NCMA/NCPCT credentials or emergency service qualifications are welcomed.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Certification: BLS within 90 days of hire.
• Experience: One year of health-care experience preferred.
• Eligible credentials: CNA/NCMA/NCPCT/NCP, Navy Hospital Corps School or EMT-related certifications.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care and assist with activities of daily living.
• Record vital signs; assist with mobility and ambulation.
• Perform phlebotomy, point-of-care testing, and EKG testing.
• Assist with IV removal, specimen collection, and catheter care.
• Document patient status and report changes to RN/medical staff.

Job description

Overview

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Neuro ICU. This is a full‑time day shift (12‑hour), three shifts per week (36 hours) with rotating weekends.

Hours: 7:00 AM–7:00 PM. Department: Neuro ICU – 16‑bed unit caring for neuro, brain, stroke, tumors, and spinal injuries patients.

Responsibilities

The Patient Care Technician provides patient care, supports independent and dependent activities of daily living, records vital signs, assists with mobility and ambulation, performs phlebotomy, point‑of‑care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, foley catheter insertion and removal, and complies with patient‑safety practices under the direction of the professional RN nurse. The PCT observes patients’ physical, mental, and emotional condition, documents in a timely and accurate manner, and reports any change to the nurse or medical staff.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (required). Candidate must also have one of the following:

• Sentara Care Partner Certification Program
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
• National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA)
• National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT)
• Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School
• Emergency Services (EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic)
• Current student in a clinical program beyond prerequisites who has completed at least one semester of RN, LPN, RT, or PT program
• Current work experience within the last 3 years as a PCT or Nursing Assistant

Certifications and Licensure: AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.

Experience: One year of health‑care experience (preferred).
