Patient Care Technician I (PCT), Cardiac Surgery Stepdown, Nights

Under the direction of professional nursing staff, provides direct patient care. Takes vital signs, checks surgical dressings, aids patients with activities of daily living. Performs blood draws and collects specimen samples. Observes and communicates patient status to identify needs and provide appropriate care. Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary patient care team.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements describe the general nature and level of work for this role. They are not exhaustive of all duties performed.

  • Performs testing and manages patient care based on results and clinical findings.
  • Records patient care activities, including ADLs: feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting, and transferring.
  • Documents vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, oxygen saturation, pain levels).
  • Assists with patient admission, transfer, and discharge.
  • Participates in cost-effective strategies to optimize outcomes.
  • Promotes patient safety, including fall prevention and maintaining a safe environment.
  • Maintains order and appearance of patient rooms and supplies.
  • Collaborates with the healthcare team to implement the care plan and report changes.
  • Ensures patient comfort and manages pain.
  • Measures and documents dietary intake, urinary and stool output, calorie counts, and patient weight.
  • Provides urinary catheter care, blood glucose monitoring, and wound care.
  • Assists with specimen collection, orthopedic/rehab device care, and participates in hourly rounding.
  • Responds to alarms and safety signals, complies with safety goals, and reports risks and adverse events.
  • Uses safe lifting techniques, improves patient flow, and performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Current Maryland CNA or GNA certification (required)
  • No prior experience required; healthcare experience preferred
  • Current BLS certification (required)
