GENERAL OVERVIEW:

This job provides direct care to patients and assists with non-direct patient care unit coordination. The incumbent is expected to perform basic nursing procedures related to patient care and comfort in stable condition, with knowledge of patient population needs in the assigned area. Additionally, the incumbent assists the RN in caring for acutely ill patients. They are expected to practice medical asepsis, respect patient and family dignity and privacy, and maintain objectivity during patient care. They must adhere to hospital policies and procedures and respond appropriately in emergencies. The role involves maintaining the patient/family environment, performing general unit upkeep, and effective communication, including documentation in the electronic medical record. The incumbent works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, with specific work assignments from the Charge Nurse or Care Team Leader, demonstrating efficient time management. Responsibilities also include coordinating activities like patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide, obtain, or perform and document direct patient care activities such as activities of daily living, vital signs, ambulation, specimen collection, intake and output, meal consumption, height and weight, blood glucose testing, point of care testing, bladder scanning, transporting patients, and documentation. (30%)
  2. Participate in quality and patient satisfaction initiatives, including bedside shift reports, hourly rounding for safety, hand hygiene, isolation protocols, and maintaining a clean environment. (30%)
  3. Accurately document vital signs, weights, I&O, restraints, specimen collection, treatments, and report changes in patient conditions to nursing staff. (20%)
  4. Assist with unit activities such as supply stocking and equipment cleaning. (20%)
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Limited or no experience: must attend 2 weeks of training
  • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions
  • Basic math skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • CPR certification (American Heart Association)
  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recent acute care experience within the last 3 years
  • Enrollment in ASN or BSN program, preferably with clinical rotation completed
