Job summary

Baystate Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician (PCT) at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. The PCT will provide direct patient care and perform various technical tasks, including hygiene, monitoring, and assisting with procedures.

Qualifications

Job Summary

Daily activities are coordinated by the Registered Nurse (RN). The PCT will perform a variety of technical tasks and bedside functions, including direct patient care, hygiene, skin care, mobility, monitoring, phlebotomy, EKGs, equipment management, and assistance with procedures on the unit.

Responsibilities
  • Provides age-appropriate care to patients.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of developmental stages for applicable age groups and applies developmental theories and concepts when implementing care for patients.
  • Monitors basic physiological parameters and records routine vital signs within the specified timeframe.
  • Administers treatments and procedures per BMC policy/procedure.
  • Changes dressings within one hour of the specified timeframe per established procedure.
  • Performs all procedures outlined in the nursing procedure manual within the area of responsibility per specifications and assists physicians with exams and simple procedures.
  • Assists patients with elimination of body wastes and provides bedpan, urinal, and emesis basin immediately after patient request.
  • Accurately labels and sends specimens of urine, feces, and sputum within 30 minutes of the specified time frame unless discussed with RN.
  • Performs Point of Care (POC) Testing and assists in the delivery of ancillary services as directed.
  • Communicates effectively with the team and patients, recognizes culturally based patient and family needs, and initiates emergency procedures as needed.
  • Functions as a member of the team, assists team members with clinical and non-clinical activities, and provides feedback related to the team process.
  • Demonstrates competency for one-to-one observation of patients based on department and unit-specific needs.
Qualifications
  • Level I: PCT training or CNA training, preferred
  • Level II: High School diploma or GED; at least one year of patient care experience; BLS CPR required
  • Level III: High School diploma or GED; three or more years of patient care experience or at least one year as a level II PCT at Baystate Health; BLS CPR required
  • Level IV: High School diploma or GED; four or more years of acute or specialty-specific care setting experience or at least one year as a level III PCT at Baystate Health; BLS CPR required
