Patient Care Technician - ED - UPMC Community Osteopathic

UPMC Community Osteopathic is seeking a Patient Care Technician for their Emergency Department. This is a casual position with rotating shifts, requiring 36 hours to be worked within 6 weeks. The starting pay rate may vary based on experience.

Job Description

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs a variety of patient care duties, including assisting with procedures and Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients. The role also involves documentation, equipment reporting, responding to call lights, and adhering to safety policies.

Establishing professional relationships and effective communication with patients, families, and staff is essential. The PCT reports to the RN, provides feedback, and offers patient and family instruction under supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Perform duties according to system-wide competencies and behaviors.
  • Report equipment malfunctions and communicate effectively across departments.
  • Build professional and respectful relationships with team members.
  • Participate in self-review and seek feedback for improvement.
  • Communicate clearly with the healthcare team, respecting cultural diversity and safety policies.
  • Document accurately in the medical record and complete clerical tasks.
  • Achieve and maintain competency in advanced skills like IV removal, Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, and NG tube management, based on departmental needs.
  • Perform standard nursing assistant responsibilities, including ADLs, point-of-care testing, vital signs, telemetry, and specimen collection.
  • Provide patient and family instruction, assist with procedures, and support therapies.
  • Adhere strictly to policies and safety procedures, supporting departmental projects and quality initiatives.

Minimum qualifications include a High School Diploma or equivalent and either:

  • One year of healthcare experience, or
  • Enrollment in a healthcare training program with clinical rotations, or
  • A bachelor's degree in a health sciences field, along with completion of UPMC PCT training and basic IT training. Microcomputer experience is preferred.

Additional requirements:

  • Effective communication skills.
  • EMT or Paramedic certification or enrollment is preferred.
Licensure and Certifications
  • CPR (AHA standards) within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting (renewal required).
  • Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 FBI Clearance (renewals required).
