Job summary

UnityPoint Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician in Cedar Rapids to support clinical care under licensed staff. The role emphasizes activities of daily living, vital signs, basic procedures, and safe transport in a fast-paced unit.

Under daytime hours with occasional Saturdays, you will collaborate with the nursing team to promote patient comfort, safety, and smooth unit operations, delivering compassionate, patient- and family-centered care in a diverse setting.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • BCLS certification required or in progress.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with activities of daily living (e.g., dressing, bathing, walking).
  • Obtains, monitors, and records vital signs, weights, and intake/output.
  • Transports patients and equipment safely.
  • Maintains clean, orderly, and safe environment.
  • Communicates with nursing staff to report changes in condition.

Under the direction of a licensed professional, the Patient Care Technician delivers hands-on patient care and comfort, assists with clinical procedures and technical tasks, and accurately observes, reports, and documents patient status. The role supports safe, efficient unit operations by focusing on personal care, mobility, nutrition, hydration, elimination, and prevention of complications, while preparing patients and environments for procedures. Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, the PCT provides compassionate, patient- and family-centered support across diverse care settings to promote quality outcomes and a positive experience.

Responsibilities
Clinical Excellence/Patient Care
  • Partners with the RN and other licensed healthcare team membersto achieve patient care outcomes and goals of care, as identified inthe plan of care.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living e.g. dressing,bathing, walking, .
  • Acknowledges and meets patients’ needs regarding movement andelimination.
  • Answers patient call lights and responds appropriately to patientrequests.
  • Obtains, monitors, and records vital signs, weights, and intakeand output.
  • Performs procedures and tasks specific to the assigned area underthe direction of a licensed healthcare team member (e.g.,specimen collection, simple dressings, traction set-up, pulseoximetry, blood glucose testing, EKGs).
  • Transports patients, equipment, supplies, and specimens in a safeand timely manner.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe environment.
  • Utilizes a holistic approach (considering physical, psych/social,spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate tothe age of the patients served in the assigned service area.
Documentation and Effective Communication
  • Uses technology to promptly and accurately document careprovided and patient data in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Reports in a timely manner pertinent patient observations,significant incidents, and changes in condition to the appropriateteam member.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and collaboration with allmembers of the healthcare team.
  • Seeks instruction and supervision when implementing new orunfamiliar tasks.
  • Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service
Department Support and Unit Operations
  • Participates in unit operations by organizing work areas, assistingwith routine cleaning of equipment, and maintaining orderlystorage of supplies.
  • Assists with stocking, inventory control, and management ofclinical supplies; ensures availability of necessary equipment andmaterials.
  • Performs clerical and unit support duties as assigned (e.g., chartpreparation and maintenance, assembling and labeling records,answering phones) per competency and department expectations.
  • Assists with room turnovers and preparation of patient care andprocedure areas.
  • Performs patient transport for admission, discharge, andprocedures in a safe manner.
  • Supports continuity of care and coordination of services.
  • Balances team and individual responsibilities and demonstratesprofessional behaviors, supporting goals of the nursing unit andstewardship of resources.
