Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Part-time Patient Care Tech for the Cardiac Intermediate unit (3A) in Illinois. The role involves basic nursing care delegated by an RN, monitoring vital signs, and assisting with activities of daily living in a 26-bed cardiac step-down unit within the BCVI network.

Ideal candidates will have a High School Diploma or equivalent, CNA/EMT/BLS certification, and phlebotomy exposure. The position supports rotating weekends and a 6am–6:30pm schedule.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, or nursing school students with one semester of clinical completed.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).

Responsibilities

• Performs basic nursing care as delegated by an RN, including vital signs and glucose checks.
• Assists patients with personal care and activities of daily living (bathing, grooming, eating).
• Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
• Keeps patient rooms clean and orderly.
• Demonstrates flexibility, organization, and multi-tasking under stressful conditions.
• Prioritizes and completes unit work quickly with critical thinking.
• Serves as liaison between patient care units and other departments.
• Answers telephone, intercom and call lights politely and relays information appropriately.
• Manages overall unit workflow with the charge RN or manager as needed.
• Performs pre-census and validates daily admission, discharge and census lists.

Job Description

Part-time Days 6am -6:30pm with rotating weekends

CDH Cardiac Intermediate (3A)

• 26 bed cardiac step-down unit that is part of Northwestern Medicine’s prestigious Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute (BCVI)
• As part of BCVI, we are able provide the same advanced cardiac care normally only available at a major academic medical center, but in a suburban setting.
• Our unit cares for patients with a variety of cardiovascular diagnoses, including post cardiac surgeries and procedures.
• Cross training opportunities to the Telemetry Departme

Under the supervision of an RN performs basic patient care activities.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output.
• Assists patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming and eating.
• Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
• Assists with keeping patient rooms clean and orderly.
• Demonstrates flexibility, organization, and multi-tasking. Able to function under stressful situations.
• Utilizes critical thinking skills to successfully demonstrate the ability to prioritize and complete unit work quickly as the needs of the unit, patients and staff change.
• Serves as liaison between patient care units and all other patient related departments.
• Answers telephone, intercom and call lights in a polite manner using appropriate telephone etiquette and communicates information to the appropriate staff/family/patient.
• Manages the overall unit workflow in concert with the charge RN and/or assistant manager, on an as needed basis.
• Performs pre-census and validates daily admission, discharge and census lists on an as needed basis.
