Job summary

UnityPoint Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician to support clinical procedures and daily patient care in a hospital setting. The role involves assisting with daily living activities, mobility, and preparing patients and environments for procedures under the supervision of a registered nurse.

A CNA certification and BLS are preferred or to be obtained within three months, and candidates must be at least 16 years old.

Qualifications

• Demonstrates hands-on patient care and comfort.
• Assists with mobility, nutrition, hydration, elimination, and procedures.
• Observes, reports, and documents patient status accurately.

Responsibilities

• PCTs perform patient care and treatments under RN supervision.
• Provide and document activities of daily living and respiratory support as directed by RN.
• Lift, move, position, and transport patients as needed.
• Meet the department work schedule and show initiative to improve care quality and safety.
• Under age 18 staff may have restrictions operating certain equipment.

Education

CNA certification preferred

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Overview

Shift: 7p-7:30a, with every 3rd weekend and rotating holidays, 24 hours/week

Under the direction of a licensed professional, the Patient Care Technician delivers hands‑on patient care and comfort, assists with clinical procedures and technical tasks, and accurately observes, reports, and documents patient status. The role supports safe, efficient unit operations by focusing on personal care, mobility, nutrition, hydration, elimination, and prevention of complications, while preparing patients and environments for procedures. Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, the PCT provides compassionate, patient- and family-centered support across diverse care settings to promote quality outcomes and a positive experience.

• PCTs will perform patient care and treatments under supervision of a RN. Provides and documents care including, but not limited to, activities of daily living, mobility, specimen collection and respiratory support activities as directed by the RN.
• Possess the ability to lift, move, position and transport patients.
• Demonstrates the ability to meet the department work schedule.
• Demonstrates initiative to improve quality of care, patient and employee safety, and customer service.
• Team members under the age of 18 may not independently operate mechanical lift equipment.

Qualifications

• License(s)/Certification(s):
• CNA certification preferred
• Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire.
• Other:
• Must be 16 years old or older
• Level 3 Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
