Profile

PURPOSE AND SCOPE: Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Patient Related Education: Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access.
2. Treatment: Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin, obtain vital signs and weight, initiate and monitor dialysis, evaluate response, and document all procedures accurately.
3. Vascular Access Evaluation: Monitor pressures, provide interventions, and report findings.
4. Laboratory and Infection Control: Collect specimens, prepare for testing, and assist in infection control practices and audits.
5. Transition Care: Support newly admitted patients through their first 4 weeks, coordinate care, and educate on treatment options including home dialysis.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Includes lifting, standing, bending, and travel between facilities. Must pass Ishihara's Color Blindness test. Work environment typical of healthcare settings with exposure to infectious materials.

Education and Licenses

High School diploma or G.E.D., valid PCT certification, and required state licensure. Demonstrated commitment to organization values and customer service.

Experience and Skills

At least two years patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.

Home Therapies Program (if applicable)

Supports home dialysis patients, assists with home visit tasks, and manages supplies and equipment as directed by RN.
