PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and in compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines. Assist in maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Supports the organization’s commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI activities, including those related to patient satisfaction, and actively participates in process improvement activities that help patients achieve the organization’s Quality Enhancement Goals (QEP).

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Related Education:
  • Assist other healthcare members in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures such as Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and disease process/access.
Treatment:
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by law.
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight; perform vascular access evaluation pre-treatment.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).
  • Monitor and respond to intradialytic problems as prescribed or directed.
  • Respond to patient responses during therapy, document treatment details, and evaluate patient prior to discharge.
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled, record treatment data accurately, and document all relevant information.
  • Report significant changes or concerns to the nurse or supervisor.
  • Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status and vascular access evaluations.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens as prescribed, ensuring proper handling and storage.
  • Maintain a clean environment, disinfect equipment and surrounding areas, and adhere to infection control policies.
Staff and Education:
  • Assist in training direct care staff under supervision.
  • Follow all organizational policies, ensure a safe and clean environment, and conduct necessary equipment and system preparations.
Record Keeping:
  • Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data promptly, review treatment sheets, and ensure completeness and accuracy of patient records.
  • Prepare charts and paperwork for patient admission and laboratory testing, and coordinate specimen collection.
Infection Control:
  • Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and educate patients and families as directed.
Transitional Care Unit:
  • Follow new patients during initial weeks, reinforce education, coordinate multidisciplinary care, and assist with home dialysis education and transition planning.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

Includes handling heavy equipment and supplies, prolonged standing, and patient mobility assistance. Must meet physical and environmental requirements, including passing color blindness testing. Travel between facilities and community locations is expected.

Education & Licenses:
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet CMS-approved certification and licensing requirements.
Experience & Skills:
  • Prior patient care experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required for continued employment.
