Job Summary

The nursing assistant performs nursing procedures and patient care tasks.

Essential Functions
  1. Assist the nurse and physicians in examination and treatment of patients
  2. Obtain vital signs routinely and as needed (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations)
  3. Perform EKG and collection of blood specimens (must use proper procedure and have completed all required competencies)
  4. Point-of-care testing – perform finger-sticks for blood glucose monitoring (if critical results and an additional finger-stick is required, RN or MD only will perform an additional stick for further assessment). PCT will not draw a second finger-stick in response to critical results. Also, codes for POC equipment must be kept up-to-date and should not expire.
  5. Keep all hospital issued personal ID codes confidential and current
  6. Change patient bed linen, empty Foleys and perform bed bath independently and with the RN and or MD as requested
  7. Receive a verbal/written report from the RN prior to administering care of patient
  8. Document all patient care activities in the electronic medical record
  9. Maintain communication among healthcare team members
  10. Always be in proper uniform
  11. Use proper body mechanics during patient care
  12. Keep patient safety a priority at all times
  13. Complete duties as directed by the RN and Nurse Manager
  14. Answer all call lights and assist patients as needed
  15. Assist with personal hygiene, toileting, grooming, feeding, and keep patients NPO if required
  16. Follow policies, procedures, and regulations
  17. Assist with patient mobility and ambulation
  18. Monitor patient safety as requested
  19. Provide emotional support and be approachable
  20. Perform daily rounds independently and with the primary nurse or nurse manager
  21. Orient, monitor, and provide feedback for new hires
  22. Stay current with all educational programs
  23. Assist with preparation for outside agency visits
  24. Must be able to bend, kneel, reach, and lift over 50 lbs
  25. Always wear proper uniform attire
  26. Address patient and visitor issues promptly
  27. Collect data and measure quality indicators
  28. Keep patient rooms organized, clean, and stocked
  29. Properly dispose of waste materials
  30. Maintain a safe and quiet environment
  31. Keep equipment charged and report malfunctions immediately
  32. Use safe techniques during procedures
  33. Maintain patient rights and confidentiality
  34. Communicate openly with family, staff, patients, and physicians
  35. Perform other duties as needed

Minimum Education/Certifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
