Job Summary
The nursing assistant performs nursing procedures and patient care tasks.
Essential Functions
- Assist the nurse and physicians in examination and treatment of patients
- Obtain vital signs routinely and as needed (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations)
- Perform EKG and collection of blood specimens (must use proper procedure and have completed all required competencies)
- Point-of-care testing – perform finger-sticks for blood glucose monitoring (if critical results and an additional finger-stick is required, RN or MD only will perform an additional stick for further assessment). PCT will not draw a second finger-stick in response to critical results. Also, codes for POC equipment must be kept up-to-date and should not expire.
- Keep all hospital issued personal ID codes confidential and current
- Change patient bed linen, empty Foleys and perform bed bath independently and with the RN and or MD as requested
- Receive a verbal/written report from the RN prior to administering care of patient
- Document all patient care activities in the electronic medical record
- Maintain communication among healthcare team members
- Always be in proper uniform
- Use proper body mechanics during patient care
- Keep patient safety a priority at all times
- Complete duties as directed by the RN and Nurse Manager
- Answer all call lights and assist patients as needed
- Assist with personal hygiene, toileting, grooming, feeding, and keep patients NPO if required
- Follow policies, procedures, and regulations
- Assist with patient mobility and ambulation
- Monitor patient safety as requested
- Provide emotional support and be approachable
- Perform daily rounds independently and with the primary nurse or nurse manager
- Orient, monitor, and provide feedback for new hires
- Stay current with all educational programs
- Assist with preparation for outside agency visits
- Must be able to bend, kneel, reach, and lift over 50 lbs
- Always wear proper uniform attire
- Address patient and visitor issues promptly
- Collect data and measure quality indicators
- Keep patient rooms organized, clean, and stocked
- Properly dispose of waste materials
- Maintain a safe and quiet environment
- Keep equipment charged and report malfunctions immediately
- Use safe techniques during procedures
- Maintain patient rights and confidentiality
- Communicate openly with family, staff, patients, and physicians
- Perform other duties as needed

Minimum Education/Certifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- EKG and Phlebotomy Certification
- BLS Certification (American Heart Association)
Minimum Work Experience
At least 1 year in an acute care setting.
