Job summary

The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus in Topeka, KS seeks a PRN Emergency Department Patient Care Tech to support licensed nurses, perform delegated tasks, and provide safe, compassionate patient care.

You will obtain vital signs, assist with ADLs, collect lab specimens, document observations, and maintain unit readiness, with CNA/PCT certification or enrollment required and BLS within 14 days of hire.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Completion of approved CNA/PCT certification program or enrolled in a certification program with less than one semester left; 6 months of relevant experience acceptable.
• BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer.
• For emergency room departments, EMT Basic or paramedic could substitute for CNA/PCT.
• Must maintain active Kansas certification.

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with licensed nurses to deliver safe, compassionate patient care.
• Under supervision, performs delegated tasks and demonstrates advanced skills for age-specific patients.
• Records data per policy, reports observations and concerns, assists with clinical and non-clinical duties.
• Obtains vital signs, assists with ADLs (bathing, dressing, feeding), collects lab specimens, and supports patient monitoring.
• Completes unit-based competencies and validations to perform assigned tasks.

Responsibilities

• The Patient Care Technician collaborates with licensed nurses to support the safe and compassionate delivery of patient care.
• Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, the PCT performs delegated tasks and demonstrates advanced skills in providing care to age‑specific patient populations.
• Responsibilities include recording data in accordance with policy, reporting patient observations and concerns, and assisting with both clinical and non‑clinical duties.
• Key tasks involve obtaining vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and feeding, collecting lab specimens, and supporting patient monitoring.
• Completes advanced unit‑based competencies and skill validations, enabling them to perform their job functions as assigned.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED
• Completion of approved CNA/PCT certification program or enrolled as a student with less than one semester left in an approved certification program or 6 months of previous experience in a specialty tech position.
• For emergency room departments, an EMT Basic certification or paramedic license may substitute for CNA/PCT certification
• Must maintain active certification in the State of Kansas.
• BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.

Preferred Job Requirements:

• 3+ years of experience in acute or long‑term care settings.
• Experience in Med‑Surg Nursing or Emergency Room (ER) departments.
