MLK Community Healthcare in California is seeking a Patient Care Tech to support our Med Surg/Tele services on the 5th Floor. The role involves assisting nurses, monitoring patients, and ensuring safe, timely care.

The ideal candidate has at least 6 months of clinical experience, a high school diploma or GED, BLS certification, and may have a California CNA license. This is a full-time, on-site daytime position with essential patient support duties and compliance with hospital policies.

Qualifications

• Six months of experience in a hospital, clinic, SNF, or home health setting within the last three years.
• Current BLS certification required or preferred.
• California CNA certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Answer patient call signals, intercoms, lights, and bells to determine needs.
• Assist patients with daily living activities and mobility.
• Monitor diet restrictions and preferences for patient meals.
• Record fluid intake/output and report changes.
• Record vital signs as directed by nurses or physicians.
• Gather information from caregivers and medical staff about patient plans.
• Observe patients for distress, wounds, or abnormal signs and report.
• Document observations to nurses and care team.
• Remind patients to take medications or supplements.

Patient Care Tech - Med Surg/Tele 5th Floor Full Time Days

The Patient Care Technician supports the work of the Registered Nurse to meet the needs of patients in order to provide safe, efficient, timely and excellent high quality care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Answer patient call signals, signal lights, bells, or intercom systems to determine patients' needs.


• Provide physical support to assist patients to perform daily living activities, such as getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, using the toilet, and standing, walking, or exercising.


• Review patients' dietary restrictions, food allergies, and preferences to ensure patient receives appropriate diet.


• Measure and record food and liquid intake or urinary and fecal output, reporting changes to medical or nursing staff.


• Record vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, or respiration rate, as directed by medical or nursing staff.


• Gather information from caregivers, nurses, or physicians about patient condition, treatment plans, or appropriate activities.


• Observe or examine patients to detect symptoms that may require medical attention, such as bruises, open wounds, cognition, abnormal vital signs, and any signs of distress or blood in urine.


• Document or otherwise report observations of patient behavior, complaints, or physical symptoms to nurses.


• Remind patients to take medications or nutritional supplements.


• Comply with the hospital’s mission and values.


• Take an active role in the importance of rounding.


• Other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education

• High school diploma or GED preferred.

B. Qualifications/Experience

• Six (6) months of experience, within the last three (3) years, in a hospital, clinic or in a SNF/Home Health setting as a nurse assistant, care partner, medical assistant or student nurse with one semester in a clinical setting. Internal candidates without the required experience but have a Certified Nursing Assistant license will be considered at management’s discretion.


• Current Basic Life Support (BLS)


• Must complete annual Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate, per hospital policy, during initial training/orientation but not to exceed 30 days from hire/transfer.


• Current California State Nurse Assistant certification preferred.


• A solid understanding of human anatomy, basic medical terminology, and rehabilitation principles is desired.
