Job summary

The Patient Care Technician at MLK Community Healthcare on the 4th Floor Med Surg/Tele supports the Registered Nurse to deliver safe, efficient and compassionate care to patients.

This full-time day shift role requires a high school diploma, BLS certification, and prior hospital or clinical experience; training includes Workplace Violence Prevention and California CNA preferred. You will assist with ADLs, monitor vital signs, document observations, and help with meals and mobility.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required or preferred.
• Six (6) months of experience in hospital/clinic/SNF/Home Health setting in a nurse assistant or related role within the last 3 years.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Must complete Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate within 30 days of hire/transfer
• Current California State Nurse Assistant certification preferred
• Solid understanding of anatomy, medical terminology and rehab principles desired

Responsibilities

• Answer patient call signals, intercoms, bells to determine needs.
• Provide physical support for daily living activities.
• Review dietary restrictions and food preferences for appropriate meals.
• Measure and record intake/output; report changes to medical/nursing staff.
• Record vital signs as directed by staff.
• Gather information from caregivers, nurses, or physicians about patient plan.
• Observe or examine patients to detect symptoms requiring medical attention.
• Document observations of patient behavior and symptoms for nurses.
• Remind patients to take medications or supplements.

Patient Care Tech Med Surg/Tele (4th Floor) - Full Time Days

The Patient Care Technician supports the work of the Registered Nurse to meet the needs of patients in order to provide safe, efficient, timely and excellent high quality care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Answer patient call signals, signal lights, bells, or intercom systems to determine patients' needs.
• Provide physical support to assist patients to perform daily living activities, such as getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, using the toilet, standing, walking, or exercising.
• Review patients' dietary restrictions, food allergies, and preferences to ensure patient receives appropriate diet.
• Measure and record food and liquid intake or urinary and fecal output, reporting changes to medical or nursing staff.
• Record vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, or respiration rate, as directed by medical or nursing staff.
• Gather information from caregivers, nurses, or physicians about patient condition, treatment plans, or appropriate activities.
• Observe or examine patients to detect symptoms that may require medical attention, such as bruises, open wounds, cognition, abnormal vital signs, any signs of distress or blood in urine.
• Document or otherwise report observations of patient behavior, complaints, or physical symptoms to nurses.
• Remind patients to take medications or nutritional supplements.
• Comply with the hospital’s mission and values.
• Take an active role in the importance of rounding.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education

• High school diploma or GED preferred

B. Qualifications/Experience

• Six (6) months of experience, within the last three (3) years, in a hospital, clinic or in a SNF/Home Health setting as a nurse assistant, care partner, medical assistant or student nurse with one semester in a clinical setting.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Must complete annual Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate, per hospital policy, during initial training/orientation but not to exceed 30 days from hire/transfer.
• Current California State Nurse Assistant certification preferred
• A solid understanding of human anatomy, basic medical terminology, and rehabilitation principles is desired.
