Job summary

Job Summary

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) reports to the Nurse Manager. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the PCT performs multi‑skilled activities to support a decentralized patient‑centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes. A PCT measures and documents vital signs, identifies patient concerns and reports them, and moves, turns or relocates patients as required for comfort and medical requirements. The role requires patience, empathy, intuition, good communication and organizational skills to interact with the Manager, Charge Nurse and other care team members.

Responsibilities
  • Keep patient rooms tidy and sanitized
  • Assist patient with everyday needs (personal hygiene, using the restroom, grooming, etc.)
  • Monitor vital signs (temperature, pulse, etc.) or EKG signals and patient condition
  • Assist nursing staff in administering basic treatments
  • Ensure rooms have adequate patient care supplies and linen is clean
  • Assist patients with particular issues or needs
  • Provide appropriate emotional support
  • Place patient on cardiac monitor
  • Empty drains, ostomy, foley bags
  • Perform blood sugar checks
  • Assist with other duties assigned by the department leader
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required. One year of patient care work experience in a health care facility or a Certified Nursing Assistant is preferred.

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, working indoors and outdoors, from elevated areas, in confined spaces, from kneeling positions, bending at the waist, twisting at the waist, squatting, performing pinching operations, using fingers and hands for gross and fine motor activities, reaching overhead, performing repetitive motions, fully using both legs, maintaining balance and coordination, lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs unassisted (and 25 lbs from 36" to overhead), maintaining vision and hearing, managing stressful situations, working rotating shifts, overtime, latex safe environment, respirator use, and maintaining tactile, olfactory sense.
