PURPOSE OF POSITION:
To provide guideline on the appropriate utilization of personnel who carry out the duties of support for nursing and clerical services. Under the direct supervision of the Head Nurse/Charge Nurse will provide skillful, quality care for all patients seen in the Ambulatory Care department.
Functional Duties/Responsibilities:
• Reports directly to the Head Nurse/Designee.
• Perform or assist with all activities within the scope of a Nurse Aide and/or Medical/surgical Technician job Description.
• Inform patients on proper preparation for various medical testing.
• Prepare patient for examination and assist medical provider during examination by providing necessary supplies/equipment.
• Prepare examining room for examination including cleaning of instruments and equipment.
• Instruct patients on how to obtain specimens for laboratory testing and perform basic specimen screening/testing through dipstick and hemocult.
• Print labels and prepare collected specimens for pick-up and print lab results upon request from MD/Nurse.
• Checks vital signs, weight, height, abdominal growth and head circumference as indicated, and document findings on medical record.
• Performs vision and hearing testing, simple urinalysis and urine pregnancy testing.
• Performs simple first aide, such as simple dry dressing changes.
• Performs screening for blood glucose levels.
• Operate electrocardiograph equipment to record wave tracing of electrical currents of the heart and document on medical record.
• Conduct interview of client to obtain routine personal and demographic information.
• Administer heart saver procedures, including BCLS upon certification.
• Report observations of patient to nursing/medical staff caring for patient to ensure professional assessment.
Qualification Requirements:
1. High school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; and
2. Successful completion of training courses including the performance of phlebotomy and
electrocardiography (EKG), or completion of a training program or programs that include the performance of phlebotomy and EKG, such as Phlebotomy Technician and EKG Technician training programs, a Patient Care training program, or a Medical Assistant training program; and
3. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
Special Note:
In addition to meeting the qualifications above, assignment to a long-term care facility requires New York State Nurse’s Aide certification.
