Job summary

Akron Children's Hospital is seeking a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) for on-site care in the 6 Surgical Unit. The role involves 36 hours per week with 7:00pm–7:30am shifts including weekends and holidays. You will provide continuous observation, vital signs, and direct patient care under licensed nurse supervision.

Qualifications include a High School Diploma or equivalent, BLS, and healthcare experience preferred. Proficiency with EPIC and MS Office is desired.

Summary

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) provides continuous observation and individual care for a group of patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse.

Responsibilities

• Provide continuous, one-on-one observation and monitoring of assigned patients.
• Provide evidence-based de-escalation interventions
• Maintain a safe environment for self, patients and others
• Remain alert and attentive at all times to ensure the safety and well-being of the patient.
• Provide direct patient care such as vital signs and transporting patients to other departments as delegated by and under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
• Stock linens and supplies
• Document observations, interventions, and any pertinent information accurately and in a timely manner within EPIC
• Prioritize and execute task for the assigned patients in a timely and efficient manner
• Alert nursing staff promptly to any signs of distress, discomfort, or changes in the patient's condition.
• Maintain a calm and professional presence for the patient and their family members.
• Follow all hospital or facility protocols and procedures related to patient observation and safety.
• Other duties as assigned.

Technical Expertise

• Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology preferred.
• Experience working in healthcare environment is preferred.
• Experience working with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
• Experience working in an electronic medical record (i.e. EPIC) or similar software is preferred.

Education And Experience

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required
• Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
• Years of relevant experience: Minimum one (1) year of experience is preferred
• Years of supervisory experience: None
