Akron Children's Hospital is seeking a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) to provide continuous, one-on-one observation and basic nurse-supported care for a group of patients in an inpatient setting.

The role requires a High School Diploma or equivalent, BLS certification, and preferred 1 year of healthcare experience. The position is full-time (36 hours) with a weekend/holiday rotation and onsite work on the Surgical Unit, utilizing EPIC for documentation.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Minimum 1 year of healthcare experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with EPIC EMR preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide continuous, one-on-one observation and monitoring of assigned patients.
  • Provide evidence-based de-escalation interventions.
  • Maintain a safe environment for self, patients and others.
  • Remain alert and attentive to ensure patient safety and well-being.
  • Perform direct patient care such as vital signs and transporting patients as delegated by a licensed nurse.
  • Stock linens and supplies.
  • Document observations and interventions accurately in EPIC.
  • Prioritize tasks and alert nursing staff to changes in patient condition.
  • Maintain a calm, professional presence for patients and families.
  • Follow hospital protocols related to observation and safety.
  • .perform other duties as assigned.

7:00pm to 7:30am includes weekend and holiday rotation

Onsite for 6 Surgical Unit

Summary:

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) provides continuous observation and individual care for a group of patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide continuous, one-on-one observation and monitoring of assigned patients.
  • Provide evidence-based de-escalation interventions
  • Maintain a safe environment for self, patients and others
  • Remain alert and attentive at all times to ensure the safety and well-being of the patient.
  • Provide direct patient care such as vital signs and transporting patients to other departments as delegated by and under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Stock linens and supplies
  • Document observations, interventions, and any pertinent information accurately and in a timely manner within EPIC
  • Prioritize and execute task for the assigned patients in a timely and efficient mannerAlert nursing staff promptly to any signs of distress, discomfort, or changes in the patient's condition.
  • Maintain a calm and professional presence for the patient and their family members.
  • Follow all hospital or facility protocols and procedures related to patient observation and safety.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Technical Expertise
  • Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology preferred.
  • Experience working in healthcare environment is preferred.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
  • Experience working in an electronic medical record (i.e. EPIC) or similar software is preferred.
Education and Experience
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Years of relevant experience: Minimum one (1) year of experience is preferred
  • Years of supervisory experience: None
