Primary Purpose

Performs specified patient care activities under the direction of a Registered Nurse, committed to providing patient-centered/patient-valued care.

Minimum Specifications

Education

Must have completed or hold one of the following:

• A formal nurse aide course
• A current certified nurse aide registry
• A medical assistant course
• A current medical assistant certificate
• A patient care technician course
• A current patient care technician certificate
• Currently enrolled in an accredited school of professional nursing with documentation of basic fundamentals of nursing
• Graduated from an accredited school of nursing
• Parkland’s job-specific training program

Equivalent Education and/or Experience

None

Certification/Registration/Licensure

Current Heartsaver CPR course completion card within 90 days of hire from American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

• Demonstrate basic patient care skills and proficiency with supplies and equipment
• Effective communication with departmental personnel, nurses, physicians, patients, and families

Responsibilities

• Perform patient care activities under RN supervision, including 1:1 observation, hygiene care, treatments, vital signs, and mobility exercises. Assist with feeding and support patient dignity and comfort.
• Act as a patient advocate by responding to needs, maintaining communication, and respecting patient rights and confidentiality.
• Monitor patient status, respond to changes, and assist in handling care needs.
• Record activities accurately, including vital signs and patient outcomes.
• Maintain sanitation, infection control, safety, and equipment standards; report deficiencies.
• Escort patients, assist with environmental and specimen transport, and perform quality checks.
• Suggest process improvements and participate in professional development activities.
• Stay informed of regulations, policies, and laws affecting patient care, and develop internal controls to ensure compliance.
