Job summary

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts seeks a Benefits Coordinator for the Department of Mental Health’s MBMHU. This role supports inpatient units at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, guiding patients through Medicaid/Mass Health, SSI and SSDI processes and advising on budgeting and personal finances.

Hours are 8:30am–5:00pm, Monday–Friday, with weekends off. The position emphasizes compassionate service, collaboration with clinical teams, and adherence to DMH policies and state/federal regulations.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of general issues and symptoms of mental illness.
• Ability to work with staff, patients and others respectfully.
• Proficient in spreadsheets and word processing; quick to learn new software.
• Knowledge of rules governing eligibility and payment of benefits.
• Ability to understand and explain laws and procedures related to the unit.

Responsibilities

• Meet with patients to complete applications for Medicaid/Mass Health/Medicare.
• Ensure Mass Health applications are complete within designated time frames.
• Contact Mass Health and agencies to complete and confirm applications.
• Maintain data tracking showing status of each submitted application.
• Collaborate with cashier/treasurer on patient financial issues.
