The Patient Financial Assistance / Medication Access Specialist supports patients in accessing prescribed medications by coordinating insurance benefits and identifying available financial assistance resources. This role works closely with patients, insurance providers, manufacturers, and internal teams to help reduce financial barriers to specialty medications.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive pharmacy insurance benefit investigations, including contacting payers to verify coverage, benefits, eligibility, and estimated patient costs.
- Identify financial assistance options for eligible patients, including manufacturer Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs), copay cards, and other specialty medication assistance programs.
- Support patients through the enrollment process for applicable financial assistance programs.
- Maintain knowledge of manufacturer-sponsored assistance programs and recommend appropriate resources based on patient eligibility.
- Document PAP enrollment and renewal requirements and schedule appropriate follow-up reminders.
- Screen patients for insurance coverage and income eligibility when required for assistance programs.
- Educate patients on available insurance coverage options, including opportunities through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient benefits, financial assistance, and program enrollment activities.
- Communicate with patients, healthcare providers, insurance companies, and other stakeholders to resolve medication access and coverage barriers.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience in pharmacy financial counseling, insurance verification, patient access, or a related healthcare setting preferred.
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical terminology and pharmaceutical Patient Assistance Programs.
- Strong attention to detail when completing documentation and communicating with patients and healthcare providers.
