Job summary

SouthernMED in Mount Pleasant, SC is seeking a Medical Office Specialist to be the first contact for families, greeting patients, handling check-in/out, and scheduling appointments while verifying insurance and updating patient accounts.

The role requires strong computer skills, experience with EMR, and the ability to work after hours in a care-driven environment, ensuring accurate records and smooth patient flow.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Prior medical experience preferred.
• Knowledge of insurance verification and patient accounts preferred.
• Working knowledge of computer applications.
• Prior EMR experience preferred.
• Ability to speak, read and write effectively.
• Good telephone etiquette.
• Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
• Detail-oriented with ability to coordinate, analyze and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Greets patient or visitor via telephone or in person.
• Registers new patients and updates demographics.
• Verifies patient insurance coverage.
• Collects insurance co-pays and/or charges for services.
• Schedules patient appointments and manages patient flow.
• Maintains reception and lobby area; handles inquiries via phone/email.
• Documents information in the patient’s EMR.
• Coordinates with staff to resolve patient concerns and ensure follow-up.
