Job summary

University of California - Irvine Health is seeking a patient registration specialist to register patients, verify funding, obtain approvals, and schedule surgeries. The role requires strong accuracy, communication, and customer service skills to support our hospital and ambulatory clinics.

Responsibilities include coordinating with off-site physician practices, handling inquiries, and ensuring compliance with medical terminology and coding standards.

Qualifications

• Previous experience with computer registration and registration scheduling system.
• Must demonstrate general understanding of medical terminology.
• Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
• Must be able to travel to off site physician practices.
• Minimum one year recent experience registering patients in a hospital or clinic, working as a Medical Assistant, or working in medical billing.
• General knowledge of ICD9 and CPT codes.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Demonstrated experience using MS Office.
• Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings.
• Ability to interpret and understand various medical insurance plans and make accurate determinations regarding coverage.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System.
• Preferred: Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms.
• Preferred: Familiarity of Joint Commission standards.
• Preferred: Experience with Epic.
• Preferred: Demonstrated experience with authorization process and surgical scheduling.
• Preferred: Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Responsibilities

• Register patients and obtain necessary authorizations and funding verifications.
• Verify patient has a source of funding to cover services.
• Schedule patients for surgery.
• Respond to patient inquiries and resolve identified issues.
