Role Purpose

The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for patients and must exemplify BJC’s standards of customer service, compassion, and professionalism. This role involves facilitating patient entry into BJC facilities, requiring emotional intelligence, professionalism, and the ability to connect personally with patients. Accuracy in collecting demographics, insurance information, benefit verification, and point-of-service collections is critical to maximize reimbursements and prevent denials. Proper selection from the Master Patient Index (MPI) is essential for patient safety. The ideal candidate will have a friendly demeanor, attention to detail, and knowledge of insurance carriers, Medicare guidelines, and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

1. Use critical thinking to solve various situations, anticipating patient needs and responding appropriately. Communicate professionally and positively with patients, families, and staff in person, via computer, or by phone to ensure a positive experience, optimize reimbursements, and minimize denials. Maintain the integrity of patient records by accurately selecting the correct MPI.
2. Handle hospital registration and scheduling across multiple BJC systems, ensuring proper patient identification, insurance verification, document scanning, and order validation. Provide patients with procedure preparation instructions, financial education, and payment collection.
3. Comply with regulatory guidelines such as Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP), HIPAA, Patient Bill of Rights, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, JCAHO Standards, and ensure HIPAA acknowledgments are completed.
4. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring constant alertness and safe work practices.
