Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; working knowledge of biology, chemistry, histology, immunology, and mathematics is required; 1 year of clinical experience in the pathology setting preferred; 1 year of experience working with CLIA regulatory requirements is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes and prepares slides and maintains proper documentation, equipment, and supplies needed for the pathology lab.
  • Completes sorting and accessioning of pathology specimens; initiates daily grossing log with patient name, accession#, and slide protocol notes.
  • Prepares specimen cassettes and distributes slides for distribution to Pathologist; identifies problems and escalates to senior staff as needed.
  • Handles filing, inventory of slides and blocks, and maintains lab supply inventory; follows safety and quality guidelines.

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The Pathology Lab Assistant is responsible for organizing, and prepping slides; as well as maintaining proper documentation, equipment and supplies needed for the pathology lab.RESPONSIBILITIESDuties include but are not limited to:Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens received, and ensures correct labeling of all materialsCompletes sorting and accessioning of pathology specimensInitiates daily grossing log (To include patient name, accession#, and slide protocol notes)Prepares specimen cassettes for each specimenPrepares and organizes slides for distribution to the PathologistIdentifies problems and brings to the attention of more senior laboratory staff. Troubleshoots with supervisionResponding to endoscopy center and physician requests related to pathologyFiling and inventorying patient slides and blocksManaging lab supply inventoryMaintaining lab equipment through upkeep, quality control checks, and logsParticipates in continuing education/in-service training sessionsMaintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including the areas of quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection controlFollows all CLIA, OSHA and other regulatory requirementsAny other duties and special projects as assignedREQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCEHigh school diploma or GED required; working knowledge of biology, chemistry, histology, immunology, and mathematics is required; 1 year of clinical experience in the pathology setting preferred; 1 year of experience working with CLIA regulatory requirements is a plus. Pathology Lab Assistant must be computer literate and able to operate multiple Microsoft Office applications.ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCEPathology Lab Assistant must be able to:Communicate with patients, co-workers, physicians, and others in a courteous and professional manner, through the telephone, email, and in-personMust have excellent organizational skills to execute a wide variety of lab techniques accurately and expeditiouslyWork and make decisions independently, when dealing with specimens and their proper handling, based on organization guidelines/policies, laws and regulationsPlan, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks as delegated by UD leadershipPHYSICAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDSRequires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment; ability to work 2nd and 3rd shift hours required. Travel as business needs require.
