Job summary

AdventHealth is seeking a diligent pathology support specialist at our Orlando lab. The role involves preparing, labeling and delivering pathology slides, coordinating autopsy schedules, and assisting with specimen collection and processing.

You will handle clerical tasks, equipment maintenance and safety compliance in a fast-paced lab environment. The candidate should have high school diploma, basic computer skills and strong communication.

Qualifications

• Up-to-date knowledge of laboratory instrument management.
• Ability to interact in a team environment, promoting a collaborative environment.
• Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the health care industry.
• Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals.
• Up-to-date knowledge of specimen fixatives and container types.
• Up-to-date knowledge of pathology laboratory tests and ordering processes.
• Ability to process pathology specimens with appropriate use of hospital and laboratory information systems.
• Ability to evaluate collected specimens for volume, collection containers, and related measures.
• Ability to accession specimens, evaluate samples for proper submission, and document issues.
• Ability to track and restock inventory, as appropriate.
• Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English.
• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Knowledge of medical terminology (preferred).
• Completion of a phlebotomy training program (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Prepares, assigns, and delivers pathology slides to pathologists.
• Coordinates and schedules autopsy procedures as needed.
• Assists with clinical specimen collection and processing activities.
• Receives, identifies, accesses, processes, batches, and transports specimens.
• Fulfills clerical duties, including answering phones, data entry, and document filing.
• Maintains, cleans, and disinfects laboratory equipment.
• Performs materials management duties, such as maintaining supply inventories and transporting equipment/supplies.
• Follows safety policies including PPE, handwashing and chemical handling.
• Transports hazardous waste to designated areas and completes required training.
• Keeps up-to-date with communications and takes responsibility for knowledge attainment.
• Other duties as assigned.
