Job summary

McLaren Health Care seeks a Pathology Assistant to provide technical support in anatomical pathology under a pathologist. The role includes describing and examining surgical specimens, assisting in autopsy pro-sections, and obtaining samples for microscopic evaluation.

Key duties involve gross room oversight, accessioning, specimen processing prep, and coordinating with pathology teams to ensure accurate sampling and reporting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree from a Pathology Assistant Program or related degree with three years pathology experience.
• Pathologist Assistant Certification, or eligible to take the Certification exam and must be certified within 18 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Oversees the gross room, the frozen section area and morgue facilities.
• Monitors specimens arriving in the gross room and accessioning as needed.
• Performs routine gross dissection in consultation with the pathologist.
• Assists in preparation and dissection of human surgical specimens and tissues for processing.
• Obtains clinical history, scans, x-rays, and laboratory data for review.
• Assists in postmortem examinations, including autopsy setup and sampling coordination.
• Photographs specimens and slides as directed and maintains documentation.
• Maintains inventory, supplies and cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree from Pathology Assistant Program / related degree or 3 years pathology experience

Pathologist Assistant Certification or eligible (must be certified within 18 months)
