Job summary

A healthcare organization in Syracuse is looking for a Pathologist's Assistant. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing, describing, and dissecting surgical pathology specimens, as well as performing postmortem examinations. Requires at least 1 year of current experience, (PA)ASCP certification, and competence in handling frozen sections and complex specimens. Applicants with a Master's Degree will be preferred, and travel arrangements require personal vehicle ownership.

Job description

The Pathologists' Assistant is responsible for the preparation, gross description, and dissection of surgical pathology specimens and the performance of postmortem examinations under the medical direction of the pathologist(s) while implementing the hospital and laboratory missions, goals, and objectives.

Performs general Pathologist's Assistant duties with minimum supervision.

Also,

• Reviews patient history at the time of grossing.
• Communicates in a professional manner with clinicians regarding submitted specimens when necessary.
• Gross photographs when needed.
• Performs tissue selection for special studies, when needed,
• Assist with the processing of frozen section specimens.
• Oversee the operation of the surgical pathology grossing room, including oversight of technical assistants, specimen accessioning and processing, and maintenance of workflow to the Pathologists.
• Maintains adequate levels of supplies and properly functioning instruments in the grossing room, including troubleshooting issues with the cryostat between service appointments.
• Performs photomicrographs for tumor conference.
• Reviews and designated appropriate limb to be discarded.

(PA)ASCP required. Equivalent certification not accepted.
