Job description

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Pathologists, this role performs gross examination of surgical specimens and assists the Pathologists in all areas except for consultation and reporting. Confidentiality of patient‑related information is maintained at all times.

Responsibilities
  • Perform frozen sections and other intraoperative consultations within established protocol and procedural parameters.
  • Dissect specimens and provide gross descriptions for a full range of surgical specimens.
  • Coordinate gross room operations and manage specimen flow.
  • Serve as a preceptor for entry‑level employees, residents, students, physician assistants, and grossing technologists.
  • Assist with accessioning, labeling, storage, disposal of specimens, and maintenance of reagents and equipment.
  • Coordinate acquisition of tissue specimens used for research purposes.
  • Adapt patient interactions in accordance with privacy and communication standards.
  • Support departmental goals and complete additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education: Master's degree from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACL) Pathologist Assistant Program; alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree with at least 3years of Pathologist Assistant experience in large‑specimen grossing.
  • Preferred Credentials: Master’s degree as Pathologist’s Assistant; 2years grossing experience; certifications by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA).
  • Computer skills with Windows‑style applications, data entry, and relevant software.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Proficiency with keyboard usage and multitasking on various software packages.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, analytical ability, and stress‑management skills to maintain a professional atmosphere.

Physical & Environmental Demands

This role requires light physical effort, including lifting up to 20pounds occasionally and 10pounds frequently. The candidate must be able to stand and sit for prolonged periods, and handle frequent pushes and pulls within a production pace. Exposure to blood, body fluids, tissue, and potential communicable diseases is part of the patient‑care environment.
