Job summary

Westchester Medical Center Health Network is seeking a Pathologist Assistant to support the Director of Division (Pathology) in gross surgical examinations and tissue processing. Responsibilities

  • Examines tissue samples to assist the pathologist in diagnosing disease and describes samples.
  • Assists in pro-sections, external examination, in situ inspection, dissection, data recording, and dictation of findings.
  • Procures autopsy materials for tumor banking and tissue procurement; supports analytic procedures.
  • Ensures proper restoration of bodies and communicates biohazard concerns.
  • Prepares quality assurance and workload reports.
  • Provides technical direction in autopsy techniques and coordinates photography support.

SummaryThe Pathologist Assistant functions as assistant to the Director of Division (Pathology) in the preparation and performance of gross surgical examinations. Responsible for processing surgical pathology specimens, including receipt, dissection, description, and examining, dissecting, and processing tissues. Also responsible for gross autopsy prosection and preliminary autopsy reports. Supervision is not a regular responsibility of this position but may provide guidance and training to technologists, students and residents.

Also responsible for gross autopsy prosection and preliminary autopsy reports.

Responsibilities
  • Examines tissue samples to assist the pathologist in diagnosing disease and provides a general description of the sample and either determines if further analysis is needed or presents to Pathologist for final diagnoses.
  • Assists the pathologist in the performance of the pro-section, including external examination, in situ inspection, evisceration, dissection, recording of data, dictation of descriptive information, and any such material relating to gross autopsy findings.
  • Assists the pathologist in procuring autopsy material for tumor banking and tissue procurement and such bio analytic procedures as microbiological cultures, blood and serum analysis, and chemical and toxicological testing.
  • Ensures proper restoration of bodies including notification of such biological hazards as contagious disease or radioactivity.
  • Prepares quality assurance reports and workload reports.
  • Provides technical direction in autopsy techniques for groups viewing an autopsy.
  • Coordinates the support of photography services.
  • May train residents in the gross evaluation and dissection of surgical specimens and autopsy prosection.
Qualifications/Requirements

Experience: Must have one to two years grossing experience in a teaching institution working with pathology residents.

Knowledgeable with voice dictation software such as Voicebrook.

Education: A Master’s degree from a NAACLS accredited Pathologist Assistant program.

Licenses / Certifications: NYS License required

Certification through ASCP or AAPA preferred.
