Montefiore Medical Center - Pathologist Assistant Job Description

Montefiore Medical Center's Division of Clinical Pathology is responsible for laboratory testing of blood, urine, and body fluids for disease diagnosis and health maintenance. The division maintains state-of-the-art automated equipment across multiple sites, servicing hospitals, nursing homes, the Montefiore Medical Group, faculty practices, and physicians' offices.

Position Overview

The Pathologists Assistant will perform established procedures in Anatomic Pathology, including accessioning surgical specimens, gross description, tissue submission, intraoperative consultation, research tissue procurement, and autopsy protocols. Knowledge of workflow patterns and specialized tissue procurement protocols is essential.

Responsibilities

1. Receive specimens from operating rooms and endoscopy suites.
2. Perform clerical duties, order entry, and updates in Epic Beaker LIS.
3. Prioritize daily activities efficiently.
4. Handle small tissue fragments and perform gross examinations.
5. Prepare tissues for frozen sections and routine staining.
6. Ensure laboratory quality standards through routine work and quality control.
7. Process requests from pathology staff and ensure work orders are complete.
8. Procure tissues for research and specialized studies.
9. Organize, store, and retrieve surgical specimens.
10. Dictate gross examinations using voice recognition tools.
11. Participate in organ evisceration and brain removal in autopsies.
12. Dispose of tissue and chemical waste properly.
13. Perform additional functions as needed and train staff when necessary.

Qualifications

• State of New York License for Pathologist Assistant required.
• Master's degree required.
• Preferred knowledge in Histology and Immunopathology procedures.
• Proficiency with equipment such as cryostat microtomes, Epic Beaker LIS, autopsy saws, surgical instruments, microscopes, dictation equipment, and cassette labeling machines.
• Knowledge of surgical cutting room and autopsy protocols and equipment operation.

Position Details

Location: Moses campus, Surgical Pathology department.

Type: Regular Full-Time, Day shift, 9 AM - 5 PM.

Salary Range: $112,500 - $150,000.
