The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.


Position Summary


The Pathologist Assistant will perform complex laboratory procedures in order to analyze clinical samples; this will require extensive, accurate, and efficient hands-on work, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex instrumentation, attention to detail, strict adherence to protocols, maintaining extensive and accurate documentation. The incumbent will also work closely with the Laboratory Supervisor to ensure regulatory compliance across all areas of the laboratory. This individual will assist the Laboratory Supervisor during routine NYS-DOH inspections and visits from any other regulatory agency.


Surgical Pathology: Assisting in the preparation and performance of surgical specimen dissection by ensuring appropriate specimen accessioning: obtaining pertinent clinical information and studies; describing gross anatomic features; dissecting surgical specimens; preparing and submitting tissue for histologic processing; obtaining and submitting specimens for additional analytic procedures (flow cytometry, IF, EM etc.) and assisting in photographing gross specimens.


Frozen Section: Tasks includes: micro sectioning of frozen blocks, staining of frozen slides, imaging of the prepared frozen section slides.


Will apply and enforce policies and procedures in accordance with all internal and externa regulatory requirements. Will be expected to be available by pager for telephonic consultation during laboratory off-hours. Will be expected to provide coverage on off-hours (nights and weekends). Will perform other related duties necessary for the operation of the laboratory. Will be expected to work independently


Responsibilities



  • 80% - Physical examination, description, dissection, micro sectioning of frozen tissue, and submission of tissue sections for microscopic examination. Scanning stained frozen section slides into a whole slide imager.

  • 15% - Establishing, applying, and enforcing policies and procedures in accordance with all institutional and laboratory regulatory agencies.

  • 5% - other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications



  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience and education, plus three years of relate experience.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience with Copath or a similar laboratory computer system is preferred.

  • Graduate from an accredited Pathologist's Assistant training program or a Fellow of the American Association of Pathologist's Assistant (AAPA) preferred.

  • Ability to work on at the main Medical Center campus and at a satellite laboratory location.


Other Requirements



  • Must exercise independent judgment with respect to evaluation, fixation, freezing and preparation of specimens for light microscope evaluation and other special studies.

  • Must demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, writing skills.

  • Pathologist Assistant License or must be New York State License eligible.
