Job Summary and Qualifications
General Summary of Duties

The Pathologists’ Assistant assists pathologists in surgical pathology services, working independently under supervision for specimen examination and preparation.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Organizing workflow in frozen section and gross examination areas.
  • Collaborating with on-site pathologists on grossing priorities.
  • Following instructions for grossing techniques and quality assessment.
  • Sharing relevant information to facilitate productivity and knowledge expansion.
  • Triaging specimens, dictating gross findings, and referring tissues for microscopic review.
  • Selecting tissues for microscopic study and determining proper fixatives.
  • Performing specialized procedures like frozen sections and decalcification.
  • Maintaining records, assisting in report compilation, labeling, and storing specimens.
  • Photographing specimens and performing photo microscopy for documentation and teaching.
  • Adhering to the “Code of Conduct” and organizational values.
Education
  • Master’s degree from an accredited Pathologist Assistant program preferred.
  • ASCP Certification preferred.
  • 3-5 years grossing experience in a hospital setting accepted in lieu of certification or degree.
Experience
  • Minimum three to five years in a pathology histology laboratory.
