Job summary

Yale NewHaven Health is seeking a Pathologist's Assistant to manage gross dissection and assist with autopsies under the supervision of a pathologist. The role involves coordinating surgical pathology activities and contributing to the department's teaching programs.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Supervise the autopsy diener and assist with intraoperative consultations as needed.
• Participate in teaching programs for residents, students and others in the department.
• Engage in CQI audits and studies and maintain confidentiality and regulatory compliance.

Coordinates the anatomic pathology production process, helping to effectively interface all production personnel. Independently performs routine gross dissection of anatomic pathology specimens and autopsies with on-going consultations from the attending pathologist. Assists in the performance of frozen sections and intraoperative consultations. Supervises the autopsy diener. Establishes and annually reviews policies and procedures for autopsies and surgical pathology. Assists with anatomic CQI audits and studies.

Responsibilities

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Graduation from a formal training program conferring a Master's degree and the title of Pathologist's Assistant or the equivalent in experience. Must be certified by ASCP, or eligible for certification subsequent to recent graduation from a NAACLS accredited Pathologist's Assistant training program. Continuing Education: To maintain ASCP certification, the employee must obtain 45 ASCP approved CME credits over a three year period, the predominance of which must be in anatomic pathology. These credits are largely acquired through attendance at the annual AAPA Continuing Education and Business Conference, due to the highly specialized nature of the profession.

EXPERIENCE

Work experience in a CAP/ CLIA certified Anatomic Pathology Laboratory is preferred but not required for hire.

LICENSURE

Certification from or eligibility for certification from ASCP.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Working in anatomic pathology laboratory environment, assisting the pathologists with gross processing of specimens, performance of autopsies and intraoperative consultations. Must have good understanding of human anatomy and knowledge of specimen dissection and processing. Intense concentration and attention to detail are required with minimal tolerance for errors. Works under stressful conditions with high time pressure, strong interpersonal skills required. Must have a good working knowledge of the AP computer system as well as general computer use. Able to provide appropriate care for patients served, regardless of age. LEADERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Provides assistance to the Medical Director, Administrative Director, Pathologists, and Medical Staff as needed, taking on a leadership role within the section(s), the Department and the Hospital as required.
