Job summary

100 LCMC Health seeks a Pathology Assistant to assist pathologists with accessioning, dissection, description, and histologic sampling of diverse specimens. The role involves supervision of residents in gross room techniques and performing frozen sections under protocol parameters.

The position requires a Master’s degree from an accredited Pathologist Assistant program, or a licensed physician with extensive grossing experience.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree from an accredited Pathologist Assistant program is required for the Pathology Assistant role.
• Physician with more than 5 years grossing experience may be considered in lieu of accredited program graduates.
• ASCP Board of Certification as Pathologists’ Assistant recommended/required.

Responsibilities

• Assist pathologists in accessioning, dissection, description and histologic sampling of specimens.
• Supervise and train entry-level residents in gross room pathology.
• Perform frozen sections and intraoperative consultations.
• Coordinate acquisition of tissue specimens for research.
• Maintain a file of digital images and ensure specimen photography quality.
• Participate in accessioning, labeling, storage and disposal of specimens; troubleshoot for sample integrity.

Overview

Responsibilities

• Assist pathologists in the accessioning, dissection, description, and histologic sampling of a full range of anatomical specimens, including autopsy techniques.
• Supervise and train entry‑level resident physicians in gross room pathology methodology and procedures, under guidance and within protocol parameters.
• Perform frozen sections and other intraoperative consultations within established protocol and procedural parameters.
• Coordinate the acquisition of tissue specimens used for research purposes.
• Maintain a file of digital images and ensure a high standard of specimen photography.
• Participate in accessioning, labeling, storage, and disposal of specimens, and in the maintenance of reagents and equipment.
• Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned and troubleshoot to ensure sample integrity and proper identification of specimens; interact with stakeholders involved in the acquisition of tissue samples.
• Participate in postmortem activities and coordination as needed.

Experience

• Experience in a pathology setting preferred.

Education Qualifications

• Master’s degree from an accredited Pathologist Assistant program is required for a Pathology Assistant if not a physician.
• Licensed physician with more than 5 years of experience in grossing will be considered in lieu of accredited Pathology Assistant program graduates.

Licenses and Certifications

• Pathologists' Assistant American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification.
