POSITION OVERVIEW

We are looking for an experienced Pastry Cook to join our baking team. As a Pastry Cook at Ole & Steen you will prepare a variety of cakes, pastries, and other sweet goods according to our traditional Danish recipes.

The ideal candidate will be well-versed in culinary arts with a passion for sweet and delicious creations. The ability to work well alone and as part of a team is a must. They must adhere to health and safety standards. The goal is to enhance customer satisfaction so that we can maintain and expand our clientele and you must expect to produce a high volume of products for our stores. This role is ideal for someone who is interested in learning about real Danish pastries and cakes and wants to pursue a career as a dessert or pastry chef.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare a variety of cakes, pastries, and other sweet goods according to our traditional Danish recipes
  • Observe and maintain the quality of products being baked, and adjust oven temperatures, baking time accordingly
  • Combine measured ingredients in bowls of mixing, blending, or cooking machinery
  • Decorate pastries and cakes in a consistent style to ensure a beautiful presentation
  • Check quality of raw materials to ensure that standards and specifications are met
  • Follow plating and display standards
  • Follow portion standards
  • Monitor inventory of ingredients for production
  • Properly label and store ingredients
  • Check equipment to ensure that it meets health and safety regulations
  • Maintain a clean and orderly station and adhere to health and safety standards
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
  • A High School diploma or GED certificate is a plus
  • Completion of a Culinary School program or apprenticeship preferred
  • 1-2 years of pastry-making relevant experience
  • The ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Able to lift 50lbs
  • Basic math skills
  • Great attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, especially during the holidays
  • Maintain a clean environment and keep the area organized and free of clutter
  • Thoroughly follow company procedures according to health and safety standards
  • Adhere to all food safety regulations and procedures

ABOUT OLE & STEEN

Ole & Steen was founded in 1991 by the Danish bakers Ole Kristoffersen and Steen Skallebæk and originally called Lagkagehuset or “The Layer Cake House”. Ole & Steen is a pioneer in the resurgence of artisanal and handcrafted baking practices in Denmark. In 2008 the two bakers joined forces and became the organization we know today.

We have been Denmark’s favorite bakery for more than 30 years, serving delicious Danish breads, pastries, cakes, single estate coffee and food. We opened our first bakery on Union Square in 2019 to huge acclaim and fantastic reviews and we’re continuing our exciting growth journey – we currently operate 3 retail stores across NYC, and we have plans to grow and expand over the coming years!
