Job description

The Big Picture

First Baptist Church of Vona (https://www.facebook.com/FirstBaptistVona/), is seeking a full time Pastor.

What You Need to Know about the Area
  • To step onto the Eastern Plains of Colorado is to enter a world entirely distinct from the rocky, snow-capped peaks of the Front Range. This is Colorado, but not THAT Colorado. Out here along the I-70 corridor, just about 30 minutes from the Kansas border, the landscape opens up into a sea of shortgrass prairie, massive horizons, and immense skies. At what we consider to be the heart of this region in Kit Carson County sits Vona, the middle town in a string of tiny, interconnected sister communities like Seibert, Stratton, Bethune, Flagler, and the larger county seat of Burlington. Life here moves to the rhythm of the weather, the harvest, and deep-rooted community ties. “Let’s wait and see how things look and feel, then we’ll decide what we are doing.”
  • Vona itself is a quiet, statutory town of fewer than 100 residents. Its main avenue features weather-worn, historic facades, and a wide asphalt road, the only one in a town of all dirt roads and no stop light or stop signs. Massive agricultural combines and machinery parked in open spaces during the summer, and a calm stillness that is rare in modern America. The surrounding towns follow a similar blueprint, connected by a network of gridded, unpaved gravel roads that slice through endless acres of dryland wheat, corn, and livestock pastures:
  • The Social Fabric: “Slow to Trust, Fast to Protect”
    • The social dynamic of Eastern Colorado is shaped entirely by its geography and isolation. Out on the high plains, help is not always a quick phone call away. Survival and comfort have historically depended on some self-reliance and tight-knit community safety nets. Because of this, the local psychology features a specific transition for outsiders.
  • The Gritty Exterior: Slow to Trust
    • When you first arrive, people will be perfectly polite, but there is an observant distance. They aren’t being cold, they are simply discerning. In a town where families have farmed the same dirt for four generations, an unfamiliar face stands out easily. Locals are protective of their lifestyle and skeptical of fleeting outside influences or urban perspectives that don’t understand the realities of agricultural life. They want to see if you respect the local culture.
  • The Inner Circle: Treated Like Family
    • Once you bridge that gap, usually by showing up consistently, helping a neighbor, or volunteering at a community event, the shift is profound. Fitting in means demonstrating that you care about the collective well-being of the place.
    • Living in a place like Vona requires an appreciation for vast spaces, a comfort with silence, and a deep respect for community values. It is a place where your reputation is your most valuable currency, and a simple wave from a passing truck is both a greeting and a sign that you see them!
  • First Baptist Church of Vona reflects the rural culture of the Eastern Colorado Plains, a region defined by independence, agricultural cycles, and tight-knit, multi-generational social circles. Ministry in this specific context requires navigating the cultural patterns where church life respects local seasons of branding, planting, and harvesting. The congregation is remarkably friendly and highly welcoming to newcomers.
Theologically, First Baptist Church of Vona stands as a Reformed Baptist congregation
  • maintaining a foundation of biblical truth. Members possess a deep understanding of Scripture and are well-read in theology, apologetics, and classical Christian authors. The church values a “Plain Sense” approach to Scriptural exegesis. They hold a traditional, conservative view of the Bible as the final authority, paired with an understanding of God’s sovereignty. Furthermore, the church expects Christ-centered exegesis that rejects moralism, grounding Christian ethics in the finished work of Jesus.
  • The church culture embraces a strong theology of vocation, which bridges the gap between the Sunday pew and daily life as a form of ministry. Outreach here is defined by missional hospitality over coffee rather than impersonal flyers. To flourish, a pastor must possess the relational resilience to handle a highly visible but geographically isolated setting.
Compensation

The pastoral financial package includes an offer of $3000 a month, plus insurance, and a generous housing allowance for a total package of $42,000 a year which can all be negotiated for a qualified candidate.
