Job description

We are looking for a shepherd who will be on the floor with the kids, at the table with the parents, in the hallway with the teenagers, and around the fire with the young adults.

We exist to see lives transformed in the power of Christ, shaping believers into Christian disciples who proclaim the Light of the Gospel and demonstrate the Life of Jesus to our City, bringing many to saving faith in Christ and the whole world to glorify God.

First Presbyterian Church

Faithful since 1872.
Devoted to the mission of today.

First Pres has proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the heart of Colorado Springs for more than 150 years. Rooted in the wisdom of the Reformed tradition and the polity of ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians, we are a church that takes both our history and our calling seriously.

We are not coasting on our past. First Pres is a multigenerational congregation in motion — two classic and two modern worship services each Sunday, a thriving family ministry, and a staff culture marked by trust, collaboration, and genuine joy. We were recently recognized as a Best Christian Workplace, and that matters to us.

Our mission is simple and our commitment is total: Light + Life for the City.

150+ Years in Colorado Springs 4 Sunday Services

Role

Warmth and grit.
Vision and execution.

The Family Ministries Pastor oversees First Pres's full ministry to kids, teenagers, young adults, and their families. This is not a program manager. This person ensures that First Pres is a great place to raise children in the Lord — and a community where families are genuinely strengthened and supported across every season of life.

This role directly supervises five full-time directors spanning Preschool, Kids, Youth, Young Adults, and Family Ministries administration. That requires someone as comfortable coaching a director through a hard personnel conversation as they are leading a parent workshop or preaching on a Sunday morning.

The person we're looking for carries a genuine, Spirit-driven burden to see the next generation formed in the faith. They love families not as a strategy but as a calling. They are a stable, non-anxious presence who can hold the weight of a complex, high-demand ministry without passing anxiety down to staff or outward to families.

The right person will join First Pres at a moment of health, momentum, and possibility — and will shape how this congregation raises the next generation of disciples for decades to come.

Who We're Looking For
  • Loves People Deeply

Relationships are not a leadership strategy — they are a genuine expression of who this person is. They are known and loved by families because they show up, remember names, and actually care.

  • Leads and Develops Teams

They can set vision, give clear direction, hold staff accountable with grace, and build a healthy, collaborative team culture across five distinct ministry areas.

  • Carries a Heart for Families

Not just children's ministry and youth group — the whole family ecosystem. Equipping parents as the primary disciplers of their children, walking with couples in hard seasons, and building structures that connect across every age and stage.

  • Is a Non-Anxious Presence

Able to hold the weight of a complex, high-demand ministry without passing anxiety downward to staff or outward to families. Steady. Grounded. Present.

  • Thinks Strategically

Evaluates programs ruthlessly, aligns curriculum to theology, and builds systems that serve the mission rather than serve themselves.

  • Has Proven Experience

A demonstrated track record executing a cohesive family ministry strategy — across children, youth, and young adult ministry areas — with the organizational credibility to lead directors who are experts in their own fields.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Vision & Strategy Develop, communicate, and execute a comprehensive strategy for ministry to kids, teenagers, young adults, and their families — theologically grounded and aligned with the broader mission of First Pres.
  2. Staff Leadership Provide direct leadership to five full-time directors — investing in their growth, evaluating their effectiveness, supporting their health, and building a culture marked by trust, accountability, and joy.
  3. Marriage & Parent Ministry Champion First Pres's commitment to strengthening marriages and equipping parents as the primary spiritual formators of their children, with programming and pastoral support at every stage.
  4. Program & Curriculum Quality Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of events, programs, and curriculum across all family ministry areas — and make courageous decisions about what to continue, improve, or discontinue.
  5. Volunteer Infrastructure Recruit, train, and mobilize the volunteer base that makes family ministry possible — developing leaders who own their areas with health and confidence.
  6. Session Liaison Serve as the pastoral liaison to the Family Ministry Team of Session — facilitating healthy governance and communication between staff and elders.
  7. Cross-Departmental Partnership Collaborate actively with the Discipleship Pastor, Executive Pastor, and other ministry leaders to ensure family ministry is integrated into the whole life of the congregation.
  8. Frontline Pastoral Presence Be genuinely present and available to parents, kids, teenagers, and young adults — offering pastoral care, counseling, and crisis support as needed.
  9. Pastoral Duties Preach and lead worship as assigned; participate in weddings, funerals, hospital visitation, and other pastoral responsibilities.
  10. ECO Covenant Maintain connection with peer ECO pastors and stay actively involved in the Presbytery of the West.
