Job summary

Norfolk International Airport is seeking a Passenger Boarding Bridge Technician to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain passenger boarding bridges and ground support equipment. The role requires hands-on mechanical, electrical, and PLC skills, plus ability to read blueprints and CMMS reports.

The position offers 2nd shift hours (Fri–Tue, 4:30 PM–12:30 AM) with potential overtime. Training consists of a 6‑month program on first shift before transition.

Qualifications

Job Title: PASSENGER BOARDING BRIDGE TECHNICIAN

Shift Schedule: 2 nd Shift, 4:30 PM – 12:30 AM, Friday – Tuesday, (Wednesday & Thursday off). Overtime may be required based on operational needs, emergencies, staffing requirements and other assigned duties. (6-Month training will begin on the projected start date, 1 st Shift, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday before transitioning into shift hours, upon successful completion of the 6-month training period. Training is intended to provide familiarization, hands‑on training and proficiency development in the operations, inspection, maintenance and repair of Passenger Boarding Bridges and associated equipment.)

Salary Range: $32.3484 - $45.5822 PER HOUR / $67,284.6048 - $94,811.0651 ANNUAL

JOB SUMMARY: The PBB technician will be responsible for troubleshooting, repairing mechanical, electrical, PLC components of Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBB) and Ground Support Equipment (GSE). Preventative maintenance program of passenger boarding bridges and ground support equipment. Ensure all PBB’s and GSE equipment is kept in proper working order. This position is responsible for reporting to the Manager and Assistant Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following duties are typical for this position. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set to forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Responsible for trouble shooting, repair of passenger loading bridges & ground support equipment.
  • Able to troubleshoot PLC controlled mechanical systems.
  • Respond to service call requests and resolve issues or problems in a timely manner.
  • Work with vendors to acquire quotes for parts, materials, or service.
  • Use of CMMS to log work orders and preventive maintenance.
  • Ability to remove and replace defective parts using hoists or lifts.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with NAA Operations department and airlines.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • At times able to perform unassisted preventive maintenance or repairs.
  • Will need to perform snow removal operations.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned and directed.
  • Administer and adhere to all Authority policies and guidelines.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: The following generally describes the knowledge, skills and abilities required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time to successfully perform the assigned duties.

  • Knowledge of Computer Maintenance Management System’s (CMMS).
  • Microsoft office applications.
  • Detail Oriented, have great organizational skills.
  • Must be a self-starter.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and blueprints.
  • Possess skills including mechanical, electrical, electronic, and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) troubleshooting. Also, Ability to properly use electrical equipment (meter, load bank tester)

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in passenger boarding bridges & ground support equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Experience in general building maintenance or building trades, inventory, computer maintenance management systems.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possess a valid driver’s license and must meet NAA driving record requirements.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain eligibility to hold a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge as may be required by assigned job duties and responsibilities.
  • Successful completion of both pre‑employment written examination and physical agility testing.

EQUIPMENT OPERATION: Motor vehicles, including snow removal equipment (snowplow and sand spreader); forklift 5K: aerial work platforms; extensive use of hand tools; air compressors; field radio; and hand radio.

The employee is required to bend, stoop, squat, push, pull, stand, and walk extensively. Employees must demonstrate the ability to perform these essential functions during their physical examinations.

WORKING CONDITIONS/HAZARDS: Exposure to refrigerants; natural gas; high noise levels; high speed equipment; high voltage; acids and alkalis; extensive hours during snow removal; stripping; penetrating lubricants and other aerosol/liquid chemicals; compressed air.

DRIVING RECORD REQUIREMENTS: All drivers must be at least 21years of age, licensed for at least 3years, have the type of license required by their state for the vehicles operated and meet the following driving record standards.

  • License is active and NOT suspended.
  • Any employee or applicant who has been licensed in their state for less than 3 years must provide a copy of their previous driving record to Human Resources.
  • An employee or applicant may have a North Carolina or Virginia driver’s license as long as they reside in that state.
  • An “unacceptable" DMV driving record includes the following violations during the most recent 3-year period:
  • Committing a Felony with a Motor Vehicle
  • Eluding a Police Officer
  • Foreign citizens with no historical driving record available to us
  • Hit Run / Leaving the Scene of an accident
  • Lending an Operator’s License or Registration to Another
  • Passing a Stopped School Bus
  • Racing or Speed Contest Violation
  • Reckless Driving
  • Speeding 25 mph, or more, above speed limit
  • Suspended License History – Drivers who have had 3 or more license suspensions as a result of moving violations
  • Temporary Operator's Permit
  • Two or more at fault accident convictions
  • Vehicle Manslaughter/Homicide
  • Three or more moving violations within the past 12 months

Note: Texting or cell phone violations are considered moving violations because they increase the chance of being in an accident.
