Job summary

New York Edge seeks a part-time Fashion Design Specialist to organize, lead, and promote fashion arts activities within NYC public school programs.

You will engage students in fashion design, sewing, garment knowledge, and related art forms, following NY state standards. This position offers 9–15 hours weekly with afternoons, and requires safety clearances and strong communication with staff, students, and families.

Qualifications

• Must be knowledgeable in fashion design, sewing, illustration, and garment-making techniques.
• Prior experience teaching youth is preferred.
• Must be able to follow a curriculum.
• Must be responsible, reliable, and punctual.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• May be required to walk up and down stairs.
• May have to lift or move objects/materials as needed.
• Work is performed mostly within a New York City Public School.

Responsibilities

• Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among students.
• Organize, lead, and promote interest in arts activities such as fashion design, sewing, garment knowledge, and illustration of laying fabric.
• Organize performance groups and direct their rehearsals.
• Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
• Ascertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and facilities, and adapt activities to meet the student’s needs.
• Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
• Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants and demonstrate the use of materials and equipment.
• Evaluate activities to determine if they are producing desired results.
• Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' needs and interests.
• Progressive development of student skills leading to a final project.
