Job description

We’re looking for Part-Time Transit Operators to join our Transportation Team! This role is ideal for someone seeking aflexible schedule with fewer weekly hours while still helping keep our community moving.

As a Transit Operator, you’ll drive trolleys, buses, and minivans along scheduled routes, helping passengers travel safely and on time. You’ll greet riders, provide helpful customer service, and assist those who need additional support. Operators also complete pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections and maintain a clean, orderly environment for passengers.

Routes operate seven days a week, with a variety of morning, afternoon, evening, and late-night shifts available. We provide paid training and support you in obtaining your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement. Ongoing training opportunities are also available to help you build and maintain your skills.

City of Durango’s Trail to Excellence

The City of Durango is a purpose-driven organization with more than 400 full-time and 300 part-time and seasonal employees across 15 departments, all working together to provide a wide range of services that keep our community running every day. From public safety and utilities to parks and recreation, our team is dedicated to delivering high-quality services that enhance the lives of all who live, work, and visit here.

At the city, we focus on continually improving how we work and serve the community. This effort is called the Trail to Excellence (T2E), and every employee plays a part in it. Whether you work outdoors, in an office, or lead a team, your daily efforts connect to the city’s mission of providing excellent service and reaching the city’s vision of being a multigenerational community that is authentic, diverse, engaged, thriving, and environmentally responsible. The full details of this vision are outlined in the city’s strategic plan.

As a member of our team, your work will be meaningful because:

  • Your ideas help shape citywide improvements.
  • The work you do ties directly into measurable goals.
  • You'll be part of a system that values collaboration, innovation, and results.

We're looking for team members who share our core values of teamwork, dependability, professionalism, service, respect, innovation, and wellbeing — and who are excited to make a difference in the community we serve.

What You’ll Do in This Role:

  • Operate trolleys, buses, and minivans, accommodating passengers with disabilities and adhering to ADA requirements and federal regulations.
  • Perform regular safety checks and minor maintenance on vehicles, documenting any defects.
  • Drive designated routes according to schedule, prioritizing defensive driving techniques.
  • Ensure day-to-day operations comply with Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations, state, and city policies.
  • Maintain high levels of customer service and communicate effectively with dispatchers and other drivers.
  • Accurately record passenger, fuel, and mileage data.
  • Participate in ongoing training to enhance skills and knowledge.

You Have:

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One year of experience operating passenger transportation vehicles is a plus.
  • Valid Driver's License

You Will Succeed in This Role If You:

  • Understand transit operations, basic vehicle maintenance needs, and standard safety practices.
  • Communicate clearly, interact well with passengers and community members, and can respond calmly and effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Are comfortable operating transit vehicles and technology, and can assist all passengers—including passengers who need additional assistance and unescorted children—in a variety of situations and weather conditions.

*Note: Upon employment, you will be expected to attain and maintain a valid CDL license with Passenger Endorsement, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED), and First Aid certifications.

What We Can Offer You:

  • Free pass to the Durango Community Recreation Center and Chapman Hill Ice Rink and Ski Area
  • Free Transit pass
  • Eligibility to participate in the City’s Annual Wellness Challenge and a chance to receive prizes and cash rewards
  • Flexible scheduling and work-life balance
