Job summary

The City of Burlington is seeking a part-time Traffic Counter to assist the Transportation Department’s Traffic Division. Responsibilities include driving to assigned worksites, counting vehicles at signalized intersections during designated time frames, and preparing detailed reports for supervision.

Required are a high school diploma or GED, a valid NC driver’s license, and access to a working vehicle. Work is primarily on-site with weekday counts, typically two days per week, 7 am–7 pm.

About us:

The City of Burlington's Transportation Department is responsible for overseeing, Traffic Engineering, Computerized Signals, Traffic Signal Maintenance, Traffic Signs and Marking and Link Transit.

What you will do:

This position falls under the Traffic Division of the Transportation Department and reports to the Traffic Operations Analyst. The primary function of this position is conducting vehicular traffic counts at signalized intersections. Work may also involve conducting other types of traffic studies or related efforts as directed by supervision. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills and ability to remain focused for extended periods of time are necessary qualities for this position. This employee must exercise some independence as the employee travels between assigned worksites and completes assignments at each site.

This is a part‑time position which requires less than 1,000 work hours per calendar year. The work schedule for this position is from 7 am to 7 pm (including breaks) with work potentially occurring any day of the week. Typically, traffic counts are conducted two days a week on either Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

• Work in this class is medium work, requiring exertion of 20 pounds of force occasionally.

• Employee is subject to hazards, including atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors and dusts.
