Position

Full‑Time Staff ASL Interpreter

Classification

Salaried Exempt

Salary Range

$92,000 - $95,000 annually (Competitive salary commensurate with experience, credentials, and work‑schedule)

Location

Primarily South Seattle, WA / Olympia, WA (travel outside of primary area as needed)

Primary Focus

Medical Interpreting, with additional facets as needed.

Essential Duties

As an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter with our team, you will play a vital role in facilitating effective communication between healthcare professionals and Deaf, DeafBlind and/or hard‑of‑hearing patients. Your responsibilities will primarily involve providing clear and accurate interpretation at clinics, surgery centers, emergency rooms and major hospitals, allowing for effective and equitable communication access. Additionally, you may be called upon to assist with interpreting in other contexts as needed (i.e. government, higher education, conference, training, workforce, etc.).

Key Responsibilities
  • Understand and respect cultural nuances within the Deaf community to facilitate understanding and build rapport between patients and medical professionals.
  • Be prepared to provide interpretation services during emergency situations, such as medical crises or natural disasters.
  • Stay updated on advancements in medical terminology, interpretation techniques, and relevant legislation and regulations through continuous learning and professional development opportunities.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality in accordance with NIS and HIPAA policies and standards.
  • Adapt to changes in scheduling and prioritize assignments based on urgency and importance, efficiently managing time within your designated block to accommodate varying demands.
  • Provide services outside of normal working hours on an as‑needed basis.
  • Willing to interpret on‑site in medical facilities.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with healthcare staff to ensure effective communication and understanding.
Qualifications
  • Fluency in English and American Sign Language
  • RID Certified (CI/CT, CSC, NIC, NIC‑A, NIC‑M, NAD V)
  • Minimum 2 years working in medical settings.
  • Familiarity with specialized vocabulary, register, discourse styles, triadic communication, and linguistic and cultural influences which may impact the interaction between consumer and provider.
  • Oregon Qualified/Certified Healthcare Interpreter through OHA
  • Oregon Supervisory (or Generalist) and Medical Licensed
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 years working in high level medical settings.
  • CoreCHI-P (or CoreCHI) National Certification
  • MS/MA in related field
