Job Summary

Provides security coverage for Wake Forest University. Conducts foot patrols and security checks, monitors areas for unauthorized users, responds to incidents, reports hazards, assists with special events and crowd control, and completes the necessary reports.

Essential Functions

• Security checks of buildings owned or leased by Wake Forest University patrolling all interior and exterior perimeter levels during the entire shift.
• Routine rounds of buildings and parking lots monitoring campus for unauthorized users.
• Protects and safeguards students and employees from criminal or potentially dangerous situations.
• Protects property and vehicles from theft and vandalism and assists Campus Police Officers in deterring criminal activity.
• Builds rapport with students and employees to foster a sense of safety.
• Completes found property reports for any unattended items.
• Uses two‑way radio to communicate with the Police Communications Center.
• Assists in crowd control during special events.
• Reports suspicious people or activities when observed.
• Provides information and directions as needed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Assists Police Officers in prevention and detection of suspicious or criminal activity.
• Prepares testimony for Student Judicial Hearings.
• Routinely surveys campus for safety, health or environmental concerns.
• Creates operation reports and work orders to report findings and suggestions to proper University departments.

Other Functions

Building Security Operations (If Assigned)

• Perform foot patrols of assigned building(s) and surrounding areas.
• Monitor activities in and around the building(s), parking lots, and courtyard areas.
• Monitor guest access and log guests as needed.
• Give directions to various locations.
• Report to the Police Communications any damaged property, vandalism, suspicious activity, or any other incident.

Parking Lot Security Operations (If Assigned)

• Perform foot and vehicle patrols of assigned lot(s).
• Monitor activities and vehicles to ensure safety of life and property.
• Report incidents to Police Communications.

Day/Night Watch Operations (If Assigned)

• Perform foot and vehicle patrols of all academic, athletic, and residence buildings.
• Monitor activities around buildings, parking lots, courtyard areas.
• Report incidents to Police Communications.

Gate House Operations (If Assigned)

• Monitor vehicle traffic entering the campus between 10pm–6am.
• Verify access eligibility via phone, internet or logbooks.
• Log unregistered visitors allowed during shift.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• High school graduate with two years of related experience, or equivalent combination.
• Valid NC driver license and good driving record; insurable.
• Skill in building security and lock procedures, protection services.
• Ability to write detailed and accurate reports.
• Ability to detect criminal activity and assist police investigations.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
• Ability to use a computer for report writing and timekeeping.
• Ability to follow safety procedures and make logical decisions.
• Ability to operate equipment safely (vehicle wheelchair lift, two‑way radios).
• Knowledge of campus student judicial system.
• Ability to prepare cases and testify in court.
• Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
• First aid, CPR and blood borne pathogen training.
• Basic knowledge of hazardous materials.
• Ability to work during holidays, weekends, day and night shifts and periodic overtime.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Security experience in a campus environment.

Accountabilities

• Assist in problem solving for students in cooperation with other university departments.
• Review, train and oversee work of less‑experienced officers when required.
• Report to Security Supervisor or Police Sergeant.
• Use UW Police Department Standard Operating Procedures, University Student Handbook and Guide to Community Living for guidance.
• Assist Campus Police Department in community‑oriented policing.

Physical Requirements

Light work, occasionally exerting up to 20pounds of force. Requires climbing, crouching, standing, walking, lifting, talking, hearing, and visual acuity for observing unauthorized activities.

Environmental Conditions

Work in adverse weather conditions, potential exposure to hazardous materials or chemicals, occasional extreme heat or cold.
